Lot Essay

See Fitzhugh and Crowell, 1988, p.227, fig.302, for a figure wearing a similar suit of armour. According to the authors, "Armor ensembles of this type were worn into battle by the Chukchi, Asian Eskimo, and St Lawrence Island Eskimo. A warrior could turn his back to a hail of incoming arrows and be protected by the upper shield, which is made of bleached sealskin and wood. The collapsible lower body armor of sealskin hoops could be tied up around the waist to free the legs for running". A figure carved wearing similar armour, in the Ménil collection, exhibited in Paris, 1984, p.217, fig.285
