The present drawing was probably made as a finished work of art. Two drawings of comparable technique and function- Jupiter and Mnemosyne and Jupiter and Callisto- are at Amsterdam, A. Staring, Jacob de Wit, Amsterdam, 1958, nos. 93 and 95, both illustrated. The pose of the Virgin in the present drawing is similar to that in an Annunciation painted in 1723, A. Staring, op. cit., no. 34, illustrated
