Lot Essay

The first two items in this lot are a typical Fatamid type; the sides have panels comprising a skeleton of paired wires along which are lain lines of granules, characteristic of Fatamid decoration. Both had loops around the outer borders originally for wires bearing pearls. For close parallels, cf. M. Jenkins and M. Keene, Islamic Jewelry in the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, New York, 1982, nos. 50 and 51; also, R. Hasson, Early Islamic Jewllery, Jerusalem, 1987, nos. 100e and 102

The simpler decoration on the third earring is also matched on numerous examples, although the workmanship here is particularly precise.
