Lot Essay

This is a remarkable panorama of the productive and fortified western coast of St. Christopher's, taken from a ship anchored in Old Road Bay. Old Road Town was the capital of the English part of St. Christopher's from 1627-1713. On the left of the drawing is Brimstone Hill. It was first used by the English in 1690, to launch an artillery attack on a nearby French fort, and was gradually fortified throughout the eighteenth century. On the extreme right, the fort at Palmetto Point is also depicted. The dramatic, mountainous landscape of St. Christopher's is emphasised in this view. Just to the left of centre is the conical peak of the Crater and Mount Misery (now Mount Liamuiga) in the North West range; in the centre of the image is the summit of Verchild's Mountain in the Central range; and on the right is the South-East range, with Olivee's Mountain above Basseterre
