Arago depicts the event which had reputedly occured shortly before his arrival in Montevideo with the company of the shipwrecked Uranie. Three 'jaguars' had wandered into the city and one had attacked a mother and child. He later described the scene in equally melodramatic prose: ".. la tête féroce s'élance, et déjà sous ses ongles de fer une femme, une mère, à le sein déchiré.. La Femme, presque morte et dont le sang coulait par cinq ou six plaies, dit enfin au Gaoucho d'une voix eteinte:
- Tuez moi, tuez moi, mais sauvez mon enfant
- Ne bouger pas! répond le Gauocho.
Et se levant pour présenter plus de surface à la faim de la bête irrité, il se tient prêt; le tigre se précipitant tombe frappé dans son vol ...
Mort! crie le Gaoucho, mort le picaro! il ne dechirera plus personne. Qu'on secoure la mère...' (J. Arago, loc. cit.)

Arago's drawing dates to the last weeks of Freycinet's second circumnavigation of 1817-20. Shipwrecked off the Falkland Islands, they were taken up the east coast of South America to Rio before returning to Cherbourg in October, 1820
