Lot Essay

The distinctly carved grotesque masks on the offered, lot are closely related to masks, incorporated in designs for furniture and wood ornament illustrated in Neues Zierartenbuch circa 1645, by Friedrich Unteusch, a German cabinet maker from Berlin who settled in Frankfurt in 1628, became master cabinet maker in 1631 and was appointed Stadtschreiner (town cabinet maker) in 1633 (see G. Child, World Mirrors, 1990. Pages 218-19.
