As Elizabeth McGrath first pointed out the present drawing is related to the masquerade Genealogia degli Dei performed on 2nd February 1566 as part of the festivities to celebrate the marriage of Francesco I de' Medici and Giovanni d'Austria.

The wedding festivities were under the artistic direction of Giorgio Vasari, and the most talented Florentine artists of the period provided designs for the various masques, mock battles and processions. Several anonymous drawings related to the Genealogia degli Dei are in the Uffizi.
