Lot Essay

A copy of Schoeller's expertise dated 21 February 1981, describes how this rare equestrian figure represents Nommo, the arms held upwards towards the sky in an attitude representing an appeal to spirits, probably for rain.
A similar figure now in the Musée de l'Homme, collected on the Paulme-Lifszyc expedition of 1935, is illustrated by Elisofon and Fagg, (1958, p.31, fig.13) and Vogel and N'Diaye (1985, p.58, fig.12)
