The present work is possibly a design for the central compartment of a ceiling at Canons where Thornhill worked for James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos, circa 1715-1725. This was destroyed circa 1750. See E. Croft-Murray, Decorative Painting in England 1537-1837, London, vol. I, 1962, p. 266
