A GEORGE II SILVER CUP AND COVER
maker's mark of John White, London, 1734

Of inverted bell form and on spreading circular foot, the body and cover applied with strapwork and with leaf-capped scroll handles and moulded rib, the domed cover with baluster finial, chased and engraved with bands of strapwork, latticework and foliage, further engraved with a coat-of-arms and crest, the base engraved with presentation inscription, marked under base, the cover unmarked - 10½in. (26.5cm.) high

The arms are those of Ward quartering another impaling Terrick for John Ward of Capesthorne (1670-1749) and his wife Thomazina (d.1743), daughter of Thomas Terrick, whom he married in 1694. He was M.P. for Newton 1703-1715 and for Thetford 1715-1722 and was a leading Hanovarian Tory. He became a Bencher of the Inner Temple in 1711.

The inscription reads 'The gift of Mr. Justice Denton, 1734'
