Lot Essay

Gould remarked 'that individuals of this large species of Sedge-Warbler so common in Holland and the fluviatile parts of France should have strayed over to England need not be a matter of surprise to anyone, and that several have been captured there can be no doubt.'
The adult Warbler is depicted with a Common Bulrush and a 'beautiful aquatic plant...Butomus umbellatus (Flowering Rush).'

DISTRIBUTION: Breeds northeast Africa and most of continental Europe, north to southern Sweden and east to west China. Winters Africa south of the Sahara. In Britain rare but regular vagrant, mainly in the spring
