Gould commented 'This charming little bird, although closely resembling the Sky-lark in its colouring, possesses many characteristics by which it may be distinguished from that species: it is considerably smaller in size, has a more slender bill, the hinder claw is not so lengthened, a somewhat redder tint on the upper surface, and a tail not more than 2/3rds of the length...a feature which at all times makes it conspicuously different...'.

DISTRIBUTION: Breeds from northwest Africa, Iberia, south and east England, and southern Scandinavia east through Europe to the Urals and through Asia Minor and the Near East to northern Iran west to Transcaucasus and western Transcaspia. North and northeastern populations move south to north Egypt, Sinai peninsula and north Arabia
