Gould related that the Bar-tailed Godwit was found during autumn 'wherever a tidal estuary or a low flat beach occurs'. In the spring large flocks from the south added to the wintering birds particularly on the eastern coasts. He added 'They are now in their finest dress, having exchanged the grey plumage of winter for the rich chestnut livery of the approaching nuptial season...'
The rusty-red male is depicted in summer plumage, the larger female is in winter plumage.
DISTRIBUTION: Breeds in northern Eurasia and northwest North America in west and north Alaska. Winters from Europe east across south Asia to Philippines, and south to southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and irregularly to both coasts of North America. Occurs on coasts of Britain on passage and as a winter visitor
