Lot Essay

These 'parlour' chairs of early 1800's 'Grecian' pattern, with beaded figurative-tablets and sabre-legs, are painted with festive scenes in the nammer of black 'Etrucsan' vases. They reflect the 'antique' style promoted by the antiquarian Thoman Hope at his Duchess Street mansion museum and popularised by Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing-Book, London, 1791-94
