Lot Essay

An ormolu-mounted mahogany bookcase with closely related circle-and-rectangle glazing is attributed to S. Jamar and was illustrated in Carlton Hobbs, Catalogue, no. III, no. 19. Little is known about Jamar(fl. 1816-1826) except that his signed work is so markedly continental in style that he must have trained outside England, probably in France. The exceptionally well-chosen veneers in the lower section are also characteristic of his work and this feature is shared with the Carlton Hobbs bookcase.
