Lot Essay

This scene flooded with afternoon sunlight, is a charming image of a young woman shading her eyes as she lifts her head to regard the onlooker. The light plays on the folds of her dress and catches in the yellow curls of her hair. A mass of red, pink and white roses are scattered in the foreground, the petals dappling the grass with color.
Duthie lived at Udney. Aberdeenshire. Two domestic subjects by the same artist were exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, in 1892.
