Lot Essay

These watercolours can be dated to circa 1840. The upper sepia watercolour is a view from the Neue Wache towards the Kronprinzenpalais with the Prinzessinenpalais to the right and the Kommandatur to the left. The Schloss, partially blocked by the Schlossfreiheit and the Zeughaus behind the Neue Wache, is visible in the background (see catalogue entry for lot 14 for further architectural information).

The lower sepia watercolour shows the Palace of Prince Wilhelm, built by Karl Langhans in 1834-36, and the Königliche Bibliothek, built by Georg Christian Unger 1775-78 according to plans by Josef Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, overlooking the Platz am Opernhaus.
