Lot Essay

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a regular visitor to the cabaret shows in the nightclubs around the Friedrichstrasse, Leipzigerstrasse and Potsdamer Platz during 1913-14, where he was captivated by the performances of the dancers, expressing them in a number of works of the period. The tap-dance, with its rapid movements, was very popular with the spectators, and the sharp and angled gestures were of particular interest to the artist at this crucial phase in his development.

Dube records only one example of this print in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt
