AN OTTOMAN LACQUERED PEN CASE of long form with rounded ends and rounded separate cover, the black ground painted with an overall design of flowering leafy and palmette vine, the top with a central cusped medallion of interlaced gold arabesques, within red borders of meandering flowering vine, white metal hinges, chains and replacement painted clasp, the interior of the lid with bold scrolling palmette and leafy vine on a red ground, an arched opening revealing the moulded rococo designed polychrome paper lining underneath, the interior of the base lined with light blue silk brocaded with gold and polychrome flowers, the brass inkwell cover probably a replacement, late 17th century (areas of restoration)

The decoration can be compared to two Ottoman cylindrical pencases in the David Colection painted in the style of tad 'Ali kari ( 31/1977, op. cit., p. 41, no. 15; 43/1977, p. cit., p. 41, no. 16).
