Lot Essay

Very few Abbasid lustre vessels bear a potter' s signature on the underside of the foot, usually introduced by the word 'amal (the work of). It is much more common to find the word "baraka".

The inscription on our piece may perhaps be read as "bakir". The re preceeds the letters to follow in order to provide a tight arrangement for the small amount of space available.
