Lot Essay

The source for almost all the various elements of this design is Thomas Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807. The caryatid figure with folded arms is derived from those on the side table in the Egyptian Room (ibid., pl. 7). The figure is here extended into a pilaster. The mounts, which have lost their central element, were used by Hope on a writing-table, pl. 11, no. 2
