C. Hindley & Sons were cabinet-makers working from the 1820s with premises in Oxford Street. They frequently stamped their pieces with an inventory number, here 6706. Other examples can be found on a Regency kidney-shaped desk of circa 1830 (Connoisseur, November 1978); a rosewood writing-table of circa 1820 (Antiques, March 1982, p. 669) and on a William IV mahogany writing-table (Sotheby's London, 24 July 1964, lot 93, see: The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, p. 433).
