Portrait of a Chinese man wearing a felt hat and standing by a table, early 1870s

Sixth-plate tintype, lightly hand-tinted, in modern custom-made balsa- wood case.

Lot Essay

The man is probably an early immigrant in Chinatown in New York or San Francisco. He wears traditional Chinese dress but his hat and shoes are western in style. The book propped up on the table is a Dry Goods catalogue.
