Album containing sixty-six albumen prints, two trimmed to oval, each approx. 7¾ x 6 in., mounted together, others approx. 7¼ x 9½ in. to 8 x 10½ in. or the reverse, one signed Seeton photo and titled in Chinese, three others titled in Chinese and two numbered in the negatives, mounted one-per-page, approx. forty-six titled in ink, five titled in pencil and four with printed paper labels on mounts, edges taped on all but two, black lacquer boards, oblong 4to. (disbound); with two albumen prints, 8 x 10½ in., mounted on card, loosely inserted.

The image of the execution scene appears in Worswick, Photographs Imperial China 1850-1912, p. 63 (illus.) where attributed to W. Saunders.

Lot Essay

Views around Canton, Peking, Tientsin, several images relating to the Sino-Japanese war in 1894 including a group portrait of the POW's and soldiers, an interesting image of wounded soldiers being treated, view of Port Arthur showing a corpse lying on the rocks in the foreground, and the English Missionary Hospital, Tientsin. Other subjects include an equestrian portrait of the father of Emperor Tcheng; a portrait of Ulysses Grant and Viceroy Li Hung-Chang dated 1879; prisoners serving 'Kang' punishment, a view on the Pei-ho river; a Chinese execution in Tientsin, a balloon ascension; the Great Wall; a wedding procession; several portrait studies including a man receiving a pedicure; a portrait of a Chinese woman, two images of barbers at work and an intimate scene of a Chinese family at dinner outdoors.
