Kilburn (1), the majority with printed captions and two with printed labels on verso; with twenty-seven gelatin silver prints, mounted as half-stereocards, six titled and each numbered in pencil on mounts. Provenance
The group of half-stereocards attributed to James Ricalton was purchased from descendents of Ricalton in Chicago in the 1970s by the present owner.

Lot Essay

Subjects include ethnographical studies, images of Chinese labourers, six images of Chinese immigrants in America, views around Canton, Tientsin, Hong Kong, Shanghai, images of Chinese boats and monuments, portraits of Chinese diplomats including Li Hung-Chang, Prince Ching, the Dowager Empress's counsellors, and several images showing the destruction and punishments associated with the Boxer Rebellion.
