Lot Essay

Seventy-nine photographs of Japan including a three-part panorama of Nagasaki, mounted but not joined, several prints from negatives by Beato including the Daibutsu at Kamkura, three musicians, Prince Hottas Garden at Tokyo by Farsari, others by Kusakabe Kimbei, portraits of the Emperor and Empress of Japan by Uchida Kyuichi, various portrait studies and images of women at their toilet.

Forty-eight photographs are of China including several views around Peking and the Summer Palace by T. Child; an image of a man driving a horse cart; views around Canton; seven small portrait studies of Cambodians; and one image of a hand with extremely long curled fingernails customary for aristocrats.

The majority of the photographs in the album date from the late 1860s and 1870s but were probably printed in the late 1870s - 1880s. The album would appear to have been compiled by a Spanish traveller c. 1884 as dated.
