Chancery 2o (232 x 184mm). FIRST EDITION. Single leaf (of 374), from the Squire's Tale, incipit: That duellith other in wode or in forest, verso line 29: And aftir that she out of swoun gan brayde. No watermark in this half-sheet. Bastarda type 2:135, cut by Johann Veldener. Provenance: fourth Earl of Ashburnham, his third copy sold at Sotheby's 9 May 1898, lot 4061 (Christie's census 23, see Wentworth sale catalogue, London 8 July 1998, p. 28) -- Caxton Club, Chicago, which acquired 148 original leaves to illustrate their 1905 limited edition of E. Gordon Duff's William Caxton (included with this lot), inside back-cover pocket of the cloth-backed board binding -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 1977.
