PETRUS LOMBARDUS (ca 1100-1160). Sententiarum. Volume IV only (of 5). Commentary by Bonaventura (ca 1217-1274). [Nuremberg:] Anton Koberger, [after 2nd March 1491].
Chancery 2o (298 x 212mm). Collation: a-b8 c-z A-S6 T-V8 X6 (a1 blank, a2r text, V8r letter of Jacobus Wimpheling, colophon, V8v blank, X1r table). 272 leaves. Text of the distinctio of Petrus with commentary surround, 64 lines of commentary. 64-line text of the quaestiones of Bonaventura in double-column. Gothic types 9:165 (head-lines), 83 (text of Petrus) and 12:64 (text and commentary). Large illuminated initial on a2r by a contemporary South-German artist. Initial spaces with printed guide letters. Rubricated: Lombard initials in red, some with marginal flourishes. (Some marginal dampstaining, heaviest in the first two quires, marginal tear on a5 crossing 2 lines of text, lower margin of X6 reinforced on verso, some light dustsoiling and staining.)
Binding: contemporary Nuremberg binding of blind-stamped calf over bevelled wooden boards, bound in one of the binderies closely associated with Anton Koberger, central panel of covers filled with Kopfstempel and Rautengerank tools forming a diaper pattern of scrolling vines, the outer panel of the front cover stamped with a repeated floral tool, Bogenfries border on rear cover, panel with roll border reading "Ewangely," indistinct lettered-stamp at head, 15th-century manuscript labels on cover, 10 chased brass center- and corner-pieces, the corner-pieces stamped "VIRGO MARIA IO," pair of chased brass fore-edge catch plate, brass hasp at top of rear cover where formerly chained (lacking clasps, repaired at head and foot of spine, later endpapers). Provenance: Weitzberg (Bavaria), Carmelites (inscription on a2r) -- purchased from Grunholt Pedersen, Copenhagen, 19 May 1967.
