Chancery 2o (283 x 197mm). Collation: a-r10 s12 t-y 1-510 68 (a1r text, 5/10v colophon, 6/1r register). 279 leaves only (of 280; final blank removed). 47 lines and head-line, double-column. Gothic types 3:150 (head-lines [question-numbers], first words of sections) and 4:81 (text). Initial spaces. Rubricated: Lombard initials and paragraph marks in red and blue, the larger initials divided, the first on a gold ground centering a coat of arms (faded), scrolling vine border in red, blue, green and gold on a1r. (First leaf [a1] lightly browned and soiled, some pale mostly marginal dampstaining, g1-3 stained in lower corner, a few leaves lightly browned or with small stains, some marginal worming at end, lower margin of 6/8 renewed affecting a few letters on recto.) Modern panelled calf in Gothic style; quarter-morocco folding case. Provenance: a few leaves with marginalia in an early hand -- S. Redding (signature dated 1819 on first leaf) -- purchased from Marshall Field's, Chicago, 17 June 1985.

Second edition of the first part of the second part of Aquinas's landmark work on moral theory. The separate parts of the Summa Theologica were first printed at different times in different places. The first edition of this part was published by Peter Schoefer in Mainz, 1471. While Part I is devoted to God and creation, Part II survey's man's moral life, this first part concentrating on the psychology and morality of human activity.
