A 16-Bore Silver-Mounted Flintlock Sporting Gun
Almost certainly by Benjamin Griffin, London, London silver hallmarks for 1761
Probably reconverted from percussion, with shortened swamped blued two-stage Spanish barrel with gold spider fore-sight and chiselled girdle, the breech with two gold-lined punzónes of Francisco López of Madrid (Neue Støckel 708, 7803) with four small decorative gold-lined marks above, a gold-inlaid cross, and the number '1', also in gold, at the rear a single gold line, gold-lined touch-hole, finely engraved grooved tang, finely engraved flat bevelled lock signed 'Allevin A Paris' (for whom, see footnote to lot 119) and with stepped tail, finely figured walnut full stock (minor bruising) finely carved in relief with shells at the barrel tang, take-down fore-end, full engraved silver mounts of exceptional quality cast and chased in relief with shells, flowers and foliage, the side-plate involving a sportsman, dogs and game, engraved silver ramrod-pipes, and later horn fore-end cap and horn-tipped ramrod, silver maker's mark JA
