Lot Essay

The sitter may be Sir William Gerard, 5th Bt., (baptised 22 June 1662 - buried 29 May 1721) who married Mary (buried 1726), 2nd daughter of and eventually heir of John Cansfield of Cansfield or their eldest son Sir William Gerard, 6th Bt., (1697-1732) who married Elizabeth (d. 1720), 4th daughter of Thomas Clifton of Lytham, co. Lancaster and had issue.
