Professors O. Ferrari and G. Scavizzi have both confirmed the attribution of the present work to Luca Giordano on the basis of photographs (written communications, 10 January 2000 and 19 January 2000, respectively). Ferrari cites two analogous works of the same subject -- in the Church of Santa Maria del Buonconsiglio, Naples and in the Santuario di Monte Berico a Vicenza (see O. Ferrari and G. Scavizzi, Luca Giordano, Naples, 1992, I, nos. A174 and A174.b and II, figs. 255 and 256) -- both datable to circa 1665. Scavizzi, however, notes that the delicate coloring seen in passages of the present work, such as in the robes of the two figures on the right, might suggest a slightly later dating to the 1670s.
