Lot Essay

The present painting can be dated to the early 1640s and compared with a number of river landscapes of similar tonality which Stechow (op. cit., p. 21) characterized by their suffusion of golden sunlight. These include a View of Arnhem, signed and dated 1643, offered at Christie's, Amsterdam, 11 May 1994, lot 156; a River Landscape on a cloudy day, signed and dated 1641, Christie's, Amsterdam, 7 May 1996, lot 76; and a River Landscape with a view of the Church of Nordosten, signed and dated 1641, offered at Christie's, London, 8 December 1989, lot 65.
