The two works in uniform contemporary speckled calf, gilt, spines in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in two (lacking some lettering-pieces, spines chipped, extremities rubbed).

Pococke travelled throughout Europe from 1733-36, and then on to the Levant and Alexandria in 1737. He remained in the Eastern Mediterranean for three years, visiting Egypt, Palestine, Asia Minor and Greece. The Description, which Gibbon praised as being of "superior learning and dignity", chronicles his travels, and the plates of antiquities were made after Pococke's own sketches. The book of inscriptions is largely made up of material collected by Pococke during these travels: additional inscriptions were sent to him by Charles Burdeth and others. The catalogue of coins in the appendix includes specimens from Pococke's collection, which was sold in London in 1766. (4)
