Lot Essay
Cf. Geoffrey A. Godden, op. cit., pl. 183 for a vase of this form decorated by Alboin Birks. See also Joan Jones, op. cit., chapter 7 for a selection of Minton pâte-sur-pâte wares and a discussion of the technique
Pâte-sur-pâte decoration originated at the Sèvres factory during the 1850's and involved the painstaking application of layers of slip to build up a sculptural relief, giving the appearance of a cameo. Solon had been involved in pâte-sur-pâte production at Sèvres; he left France in 1870 and joined the Minton factory, where experiments in the technique had already been made since the 1850's, which he developed further. An acknowledged master, his work was exhibited internationally and he trained a number of apprentices. The technique lent itself to the depiction of whimsical, mythological figures wearing transparent drapery, which were favoured by Solon. As the designs were all executed individually, each composition was unique and expensive to produce
