Lot Essay

This fine drawing is clearly related to lot 68, an oil version which Stock exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1894, a year before he showed the drawing at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. However it should perhaps be seen as an independent version rather than a study for the oil, being carefully finished, larger in scale, and showing significant compositional differences.
The drawing is unlike any other work by Stock in the Osmaston collection, and is in fact the earliest by some years. It may also have been the first which Osmaston acquired. The exhibition details are taken from the old exhibition labels on the back and have not been checked in the catalogue, which is missing from the series of RI catalogues in the V & A Library
