Lot Essay

An artful combination of a sentimental theme, 'aesthetic' decor and academic technique, Frank Dicksee's Harmony (Tate Gallery) made the young artist's name when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1877, being voted the 'picture of the year' and bought for the Chantrey Bequest. It is still probably his most famous work.
