Cività Castellana is about thirty miles north of Rome, in the direction of Viterbo. Lear was living in Rome between 1837 and 1847, except for two trips back to England in 1841 and 1845-6. Turner made several sketches of the aqueduct which joins Nepi and Cività Castellana in 1820.
