Lot Essay

The inscriptions on the backboard confirm that the pastel drawings are, in fact, copies after John Russell. The originals were last recorded in the collection of the Hon. F. Leveson Gower (see Connoisseur, vol.8, 1904, pp.145 and 162). The technical virtuosity of these drawings attest to Wehrschmidt's ability and similar copies were exhibited at the Royal Academy 1905-1915 when there was a revival of interest in this medium
