Gisburne Park, West Riding, Yorkshire, is the ancient seat of the Lister family. The estate originally came to the family by the marriage of John Lister, son of Thomas Lister to Isabel, daughter and heir of John de Bolton, Bow-bearer of the Forest of Bowland in the Duchy of Lancaster, and widow of Henry de Chiderow, in 1312.
The house was renamed Gisburne Park after it was rebuilt by Thomas Lister (1688-1745) in 1724. He was succeeded by his eldest son Thomas who was created 1st Baron Ribblesdale in 1797.
Another picture of Gisburne, attributed to J.F. Nollekens and Arthur Devis is illustrated in John Harris, The Artist and The Country House, London, 1979, p. 218, no. 235.
