Lot Essay

In his catalogue raisonné, Dr. Hayes, describing the present picture as a 'fine, small canvas', observes that it is a variant of the slightly larger landscape in the Tate Gallery (see J. Hayes, op.cit. no.169) -both of which he dates to c.1786. The Tate picture differs chiefly in showing a drover with two cattle crossing a bridge in a slightly broader panorama.
