Lot Essay

Traver's College was founded in 1802, with money bequeathed by Samuel Travers, to house the Naval Knights, retired naval officers who had fallen on hard times. By 1890 they numbered only four and, some of the residents having gained a reputation for bad behaviour in the town, the college was disbanded by an Act of Parliament in 1892. The following year St. George's School moved down from the Castle and continues to be housed there today.
