Lot Essay

Kettledrum, by Rataplan out of Hybla, won the Derby in 1861. Lane (op.cit.) records that attention before the race was strongly focused on James Merry's Dundee who, though suffering a problem with his forelegs, started at 3 to 1 against. Diophantus and Klarikoff were second and third favourites respectively.
In the race, Klarikoff started badly, and one of Dundee's forelegs 'went' although he courageously carried on. Bullock, who's ride was much admired, made his move on Kettledrum at the Stand winning by a length from Dundee who was a head in front of Diophantus.
In the St. Leger of the same year Kettledrum was beaten by a hand by Caller Ou in the fastest race so far recorded.
