Lot Essay

This combination of De Morgan's oblong peacock blue tiles with a border of square Isnik-style flower tiles was used by the architect Halsey Ricardo for the covered entrance way and all the passageways in the house he designed for Sir Ernest Debenham at no. 8 Addison Road in 1908. For that house the metalwork, including lights with jewel-like enamels and coloured glass, was carried out by the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft. The plasterwork was designed by Ernest Gimson in a pattern very like that shown here. This drawing must be connected with that commission in some way, either visualising or recording one of the schemes of decoration
