Lot Essay

This highly finished drawing is reminiscent of the luxurious French pattern-books of the 1870s, notably those by Prignot, whose collection of sixty plates entitled L'Architecture, la Decoration et L'Ameublement, appeared in 1878. La Tenture Moderne, concentrating in upholstery, but including furniture and room settings followed in 1882. This type of Renaissance-revival scheme with a carved credenza and trophies of exotic weapons and firearms was described as Style Henri II. Prignot spent two periods in London, 1848-55 and 1870-75, both resulting in rich and elaborate exhibition pieces for the luxury cabinet-making and furnishing firm of Jackson & Graham
