Lot Essay

The luxurious draperies and fine Axminster-style carpet suggest a Royal or Princely owner. A watercolour of Ernst Augustus, King of Hanover in his study in the Royal Palace, Leinestrasse, by Kretschmer is reproduced by Mario Praz in his Illustrated History of Interior Decoration, pl. 236, suggesting that this may be a bedroom in the same palace, possibly the King's own. The stove is similar to that in the King's study, even to the shape of the urn on top, and the window is in the same proportion.

Queen Victoria's accession in 1837 broke the link between Britain and the Kingdom of Hanover, since she was disbarred from the throne while any male relatives lived. Ernst, formerly Duke of Cumberland, fifth son of George III, succeeded to the throne of Hanover at the Death of William IV; he died in 1851
