Lot Essay

The earliest owner of this painting was Catholina Lambert, a silk manufacturer who lived in lavish style in a mock English castle overlooking Paterson, New Jersey in which he housed his enormous collection, apparently better known for its quantity than its quality. He later sold the painting back to Durand-Ruel in New York.

In their early days in New York, Durand-Ruel was constantly selling works to the new American collectors as their fortunes or tastes fluctuated. The Havermeyers, Potter Palmers and others frequently took advantage of the Durand-Ruel approach in order to develop their collections and refine their taste.
