Lot Essay

La Varenne is on the Marne approximately fifteen miles south-east of Paris. In July 1913, Marquet stayed there and painted a number of pictures, including the present work. Another view of La Varenne, dated 1913, was exhibited at Galerie Schmit, Marquet, 1967, no. 38 (illustrated in colour).

To be included in the forthcoming Albert Marquet catalogue raisonné being prepared by Jean Claude Martinet at the Wildenstein Institute and sold with the certificate of Mme. Marcelle Marquet dated 31 mai 1967.
