Lot Essay

The Submariner model was introduced to the market at the Basel Fair in 1954 after having been tested during Professor August Piccard and his son's Jacques world depth record of 10,335 feet below the ocean's surface. The watch had been fixed to the outside of their bathyscaphe and survived the test.

Since then, the model has been modified several times, but has never lost its appeal to collectors.

A similar example to the present lot is illustrated in Rolex Wristwatches by James M. Dowling & Jeffrey P. Hess, p. 263.
