densely worked with gilt sequins and tinsel, with a raised network of eight sequined fish with glass bead eyes above a crown of green silk worked with flowers, the headband embroidered in tinsel with palmettes on a snaking vine with a central crown motif against a ground of sequins, Lucknow, probably for the Oudh rulers, mid 19th century, (damages)

Lot Essay

The Europeanised Nawab of Lucknow, Ghazi ud-Din Haidar (r.1814-27) took the title of 'King of Oudh' and adopted the wearing of a European-style crown in accordance with his title. See Hats from India, Rosemary Crill, Victoria & Albert Museum, page 50, no 31.
